Enzymes in Solvent Conditioned Poultices for the Removal of Starch-based Adhesives from Iron Gall Ink Corroded Manuscripts

Abstract

SUMMARIES Semi-aqueous amylase poulticing methods were tested with the objective to detach silking from archival documents weakened by iron gall ink corrosion. Originally amylose gels on the basis of methylcellulose as gel forming agent containing methyl cellosolve were used to remove wheat starch paste adhesives modified by addition of aluminiumsulfate from test artifacts that have been restrenthened according to the traditional siliking technique. These experiments led to the development of polyethylenoxide gels in which the methyl cellosolve and amylase were incorporated. A system was developed by which a fully aqueous amylase gel was used to detach silking from iron gall ink test artifacts protected from the contact with water by having been impregnated with ethylene glycol monomethylether (EGMM) – water blends. The migration of ink and degradation products could successfully be prevented when the artifact to be poulticed was firstly impregnated with the organic solvent. The method was sucessfully used on original artifacts. Des recherches ont été effectuées concernant deux possibilités différentes visant à retirer les contrecollages difficilement solubles du papier sensible à l'eau qui avaient souffert de la corrosion à l'encre gallique en milieu partiellement aqueux. Les expériences ont été réalisées sur des échantillons de contrecollages modifiés, préparés à partir de farine de blé et donc de pâte difficilement soluble d'amidon en utilisant des gels d'amylase partiellement aqueux contenant du solvant methoxy-éthanole (méthyl cellosolve). Sur la base des résultats obtenus en utilisant des gels d'oxyde de polyéthylène contenant des additifs d'amylase et de méthoxyéthanole (méthyl cellosolve) pour retirer les contrecollages administrés aux échantillons testés des méthodes d'application ont été développées et analysées. Une des méthodes d'application a été modifiée pour pouvoir être utilisée sur des échantillons de plus grandes dimensions. Par ailleurs un système a été mis en place afin d'utiliser le gel d'amylase sans se servir d'additif de solvant (méthyl cellosolve) pour le contrecollage. Aucun changement indésiré n'a pu être observé sur les échantillons utilisés. Enfin cette méthode a pu être appliquée sur un objet authentique. Es werden Möglichkeiten zur Abnahme schwer löslicher Kleisterkaschierungen von wasserempfindlichen, tintenfraßgeschädigten Papieren unter Verwendung teilwäßriger Amylasegele untersucht. Unter Zusatz von Methoxyethanol (Methylcellosolve) teilwäßrig angesetzte Amylasegele werden für die Abnahme von Probekaschierungen verwendet, die mit Weizenstärkekleister auf tintenfraßgeschädigtem Probematerial ausgeführt worden waren. Der Kleister wurde durch Zusatz von Aluminiumsulfat schwer löslich gemacht. Aus den Arbeitsergebnissen werden Behandlungsmethoden zur Abnahme von Kaschierungen von tintenfraßgeschädigten Probepapieren entwickelt, wobei die Amylase und Methylcellosolve-Zusätze in Polyethylenoxidgele eingebracht werden. Es wird außerdem ein System für vollflächige Behandlungen vorgestellt, Amylasegele auf Polyethylenoxidbasis ohne Lösungsmittelzusatz kontrolliert auf mit Äthylenglycolmonomethylether (EGMM) getränkte Objekte wirken zu lassen wodurch die Abnahme der Kaschierung möglich wird, ohne daß Veränderungen des behandelten Objekts auftreten.
