Most recent scholarship on Marvell's "Horatian Ode" has read the poem as an expression of Marvell's loyalty to Cromwell and republican government. This paper looks beyond categories of ideological loyalty and instead argues that the ode offers a distinct expression of the social and cultural foundations of the new regime. The ode bases its praise for the state on its citizens' common interest in securing property rights and on their communal ownership of government. The speculation in Irish land in the 1640s by English investors that Cromwell's military victory secured for them provides the crucial historical context for this representation.
