There are many user-oriented questions in cartographic design that can be answered through research and there are both indirect and direct methods that may be employed in their investigation. Indirect approaches include (1) empirical (trial and error) methods and (2) adaptation of findings from other fields. Direct approaches include: (1) censuses of user-reactions, (2) task-oriented investigations, and (3) psychophysical studies. As the scientific aspects of cartography develop, it is appropriate that an increasing proportion of research effort in cartographic design be scholarly and rigorous and consist of studies that can be classed as direct.
