Landscape evaluation and the essex coast

Abstract

Wallace B. C. (1974) Landscape evaluation and the Essex coast, Reg. Studies 8, 299–305. Landscape considerations will make a significant contribution towards formulating planning policy for the Essex coast. The coastal landscape character is described and existing methods of landscape evaluation are reviewed but found lacking. Method of landscape evaluation devised that makes a relative assessment of landscape quality relying on subjective interpretation applied in a consistent and rational manner. Description and utilization of method which analyses the contribution of seven key landscape components to landscape quality. Results and conclusions of study are detailed and landscape quality profiles for different stretches of the Essex coast indicated.
