Gravity model analysis of coins found at Dura Europus, in Roman Syria, indicates a sharp increase in the difficulty of trade between 235 and 253 A.D. This was caused either by political difficulties or changes in monetary policy. Residuals from the model imply a special link between Dura and northern Syria and suggest relatively little interaction with Phoenicia and Cilicia throughout the first three centuries A.D.
