This article is an Enghsh-language version (somewhat abbreviated) of a document in French' published by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).That document was prepared by Working Group I which was established during the international meeting on Mass, held at the BIPM from November 23rd to 24th, 1976 [ 13.The members of the Working Group were P. RiCty (Institut National de MCtrologie, Paris), F.E. Jones (National Bureau of Standards, Washington D.C.) and P. Carre (BIPM, SBvres), who were later joined by M. Kochsiek (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunschweig)
