Novas redes urbanas: cidades medias e pequenas no processo de globalizacao

Abstract

Cidades pequenas. New urban nets: the role of small and medium size cities in the globalization process A significant set of economical changes, above all, has influenced the structures according to which the urban nets are organized. The increase of circulation shapes and rhythms has played a key role in this redefinition and transforms substantially the roles small and medium-size cities play or are likely to play, in a moment when the scales according to which the spatial relations establish are broadened. The relations between the local and the global have been the focus of many analyses. In this paper, however, the analysis of contemporary dynamics is emphasized, taking as a reference the relations between the city and the region and the relations between the city and the field in order to understand how small and medium-size cities reposition or are likely to reposition in a globalizing world. Key words: Urban nets. Medium-size cities. Small cities
