David Henige, a librarian and historian, explores the principles and practices of accurate quoting. Using the examples of quotations attributed to Charles H. Duell, Joseph Lister, J.E. Erichsen, and Albert Michelson, Henige discusses the ways in which inaccurate quotations and the repeated use of common editorial modifications, including ellipses and bracketed alterations, have altered the original material over time. The author urges researchers to take care to seek the original source of citations in an effort to ensure the accuracy of their own quotations.
