KNIFONG, J. D. Logical Abilities of Young Children-Two Styles of Approach. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1974, 45, 78-83. 2 exemplary test items representing different logical reasoning patterns are analyzed using 2 of Piaget's cognitive structures: transductive logic and the complete combinatorial system. The analysis showed that reported performance of young children (Ennis, Finkelstein, Smith, & Wilson 1969; Hill 1960; O'Brien & Shapiro 1968) should have been expected and can be explained on the basis of Piaget's theories. The result of this analysis is contrary to popular interpretations of Piaget's views concerning the logical abilities of young children.
