This article, written in honor of Solon T. Kimball, explores the concepts of event analysis, the natural history method, and the ritual process in relation to the processes of enculturation. The author focuses on one American ritual, the family reunion, as an example of a learning context within which children absorb the patterns and rhythms of a culture. Following the work of Kimball, the author advocates the analysis of various ceremonies and gatherings as events where cultural meanings are expressed and enacted and through which children and adults learn and relearn the intricacies of a particular symbolic universe.
