L'américanisme français à la veille de la fondation de la Société des Américanistes

Abstract

French americanism before the foundation of the Société des Américanistes. We cannot correctly explain the process which led to the foundation of the Société des Américanistes without taking into account the whole previous history of this domain. This article presents the major institutions which contributed to develop research on Amerindian societies in France, the motives which were behind this anthropological activity, along with the first attempts to form a circle of « specialists ». This study shows that the Société des Américanistes benefited from the experience of the scholarly tradition while its scientific project established new bases for research.
