We are witnessing today an upsurge in national interest in aging and in the aged. As far as biomedical and social‐behavioral research is concerned, the increasing interest of scientists, the government, and the public appears to be an enduring trend. There are good reasons to believe that there is room for young scientists trained in the problems of aging. These trained scientists can be confident of support for meritorious research. Support can also be offered to researchers who wish to make mid‐career changes in favor of research on aging. It is hoped that programs like the NIA's planned new emeritus scientist program will begin to broaden the spectrum of research in aging.
