Aside from their economic power, the great industrial corporations have a significant role in the creation and application of technical knowledge. Because of their power and the fact that most scientists and engineers work in private industry, these organizations have had substantial influence over problem definition and policy-formation related to a variety of critical issues. Few would disagree with the statement that knowledge shapes policy. Accordingly, whatever group controls the creation and distribution of knowledge in a society heavily influences policymaking and the general direction of social change and development. We discuss two problems: (1) The processes related to the development and application of knowledge in advanced societies which have been strongly influenced by giant corporations. Knowledge production, scientific and technical work have been closely tied to the economic goals of individual corporations and the industrial system at large. (2) How may industrial societies learn to deal with critical problems such as environmental pollution when serious consideration of these problems requires allocation of resources to activities that are not directly in line with the developmental model of industrial corporations and the industrial system?
