Many states are concerned about their current levels of agricultural diversification. Thus, each state's agricultural production diversification is measured for 1988 using various indices. These indices measure both the number of commodities produced and the evenness of production among those commodities within a state. State rankings of diversification changed as diversification was measured by the number of commodities produced vs. production evenness among those commodities. California is the most diversified state. Alaska is the least diversified state when measured strictly by the number of commodities produced. Vermont is the least diversified state when evenness of production among commodities is also measured. Computed annual indices for Iowa and New York from 1960 through 1988 indicates that New York, but not Iowa, may have become less diversified over those 28 yr.
