Abstract

'Professional' is one of those sponge words—like 'culture' or 'fashion' or, for that matter, 'natural history'—which tend to be used in a confusing variety of senses. On the whole such words normally serve us best by being left in this convenient vagueness. But there come times when we want to look more closely at the concepts for which they do this rough duty and when we therefore have to start by carefully defining terms. This is one of those occasions.
