Carto-bibliographical description concerns the systematic analysis of early printed maps as objects. As such it is the corollary of descriptive bibliography applied to typographic material. One principle concern in the study of maps is the identification and sequential ordering of changes in order to clarify the printing history of the map and to authenticate it as an historical document. To do so, it is necessary to identify the plate or plates from which the map was printed, and then to determine the sequence of states of the plate by cataloguing all of the changes made to the map during its period of use. This article describes ways to identify, categorize, and describe the changes made to early printed maps.
