In this paper we will explore qualities of good patterns. Not every documented pattern describes a solution that is in itself whole and achieves the "Quality Without A Name". Sometimes we find pattern descriptions that seem to be odd or miss the point. The discussion of qualities that a pattern should possess can help to express such feelings and provide clear suggestions for pattern authors. We will argue that the ultimate quality of a pattern is its wholeness. In order to achieve and sustain wholeness, we will discuss which kinds of abstractions are valid, how to properly compose larger wholes and encapsulate smaller wholes, how to keep patterns open for variations and how to equilibrate the interplay of smaller and larger patterns. To illustrate the concepts, examples will be drawn from the fields of software design and education. Each section will also illustrate the ideas using a path metaphor.
