This article argues and illustrates why housing and health ought to be considered in terms of numerous factors as well as the interrelations between them. An ecological interpretation recognizes that behavioural, biological, cultural, economic, social, physical and political factors need to be considered because they can influence both housing conditions and health status. Objective, quantifiable measures and subjective, qualitative assessments are all necessary. This article presents an interdisciplinary interpretation of health and housing using the contributions from several disciplines and professions in a complementary way. It also describes two examples of how this broad interpretation has been applied in Britain and Norway.
