Pregnant adolescent females from economically and socially disadvantaged environments are more likely to choose early sexual activity, pregnancy, and repeated childbearing as a means to resolve the adolescent identity crisis. This combination of economic and social deprivation challenges professionals to develop treatment programs which effectively address these adolescents' psychosocial needs as well as their healthcare needs. In this paper the authors discuss: (a) the forces compelling young female adolescents towards early parenthood, (b) the inclusion of an art therapy component into a community-based pregnancy program for elementary and junior high school girls, (c) the use of interactive museum gallery visits to enhance art therapy treatment goals, and (d) case vignettes which illustrate the issues raised for the adolescent and art therapist working in this setting.
