In 1865 Alexander Gardner published an album entitled Rays of Sunlight from South America, contammg 70 prints made from negatives taken in Peru by H. D. W. Moulton (Figure 1). The size of the edition is unknown but examples are exceedingly rare, and little has been published about the photographer1. As his biography reveals, Moulton was an adventurous expatriate. His work not only met Gardner's standards but endures as a significant documentation of the internationally important guano trade.
