Abstract

Written by two leading historians of the age, this sumptuous account of life in the Burgundian Low Countries during the period from 1380 to 1530 is adorned by a magnificent range of illustrations, many of which are full-page and the majority of which are in colour. The volume is organised thematically, and the authors emphasise such important developments as the establishment of the civil state and the gradual laicisation of society. The materials of everyday life, political processes and the cultural and artistic efflorescence of the age are treated at length, and each is illumined by close integration with the illustrations. The work as a whole stands as a notable example of the harmonious fusion of text and pictures, and in its lavish format and splendour of production The Burgundian Netherlands stands as a superb example of the book-maker's craft.
