Information technology has advanced to a degree that we now have a vast number of information sources available for use in geographic inquiry. In order to use meaningfully the information contained in a complex, hypermedia system, users must know what information they need, its characteristics, its availability and how to get it. Although the spatial metaphor dominates current thinking and approaches to hypermedia information access, the metaphor has been so overextended that its continued use as a model requires critical examination. By tracing the origin and development of the spatial metaphor we are able to point to some concerns associated with its universal application, and its appropriateness for structuring the access to geographic information.
