This article reports the results of an exploratory, observational case study of three elementary school library media centers (LMCs). The purpose of the study was to determine whether LMC programs meeting specific criteria provide a program that can be said to promote or enhance positive self-concepts in children. The conceptual basis for the importance of the self-concept and library media centers is discussed. The six most common self-concept factors identified in research constitute the basis for the study. The factors selected for study were: cooperation, independence, success, positive atmosphere, challenge, and feeling of value or acceptance. Research design and methodology that focus on observation, interviews, and diary are discussed. The observation instrument used in the study is provided. Results suggest that LMCs can play a positive role in developing positive self-concepts in children.
