This paper relates how the epistemological frame of reference of a research group at Stendhal University in Grenoble underwent changes from an initial interest in learning and teaching issues to broader sociolinguistic concerns, while paying close attention to continuing education in a context of multilingual communities, themselves in a state of flux. We had to define anew how to analyze complex linguistic situations and the components of their mainly bilingual communicative repertoires, in relation to status, attitudes, and consciousness. We thus integrated into our sociodidactic perspective the multilingual subject, not only as a mere producer but as both spectator and actor of his or her language.
