The Hippocratics on Male Erotic Desire

Abstract

Hippocratic authors recognized a broad class of threats to male reproductive health: the act of intercourse itself, environmental factors, the spread of disease from elsewhere in the body, and direct harm to the genitalia potentially impaired male reproductive health. They recommended purely physical therapies to male patients by viewing men as erotically desirous by nature. Their model of the desiring male body also pervaded contemporary religious modes of healing, where divine forces could inspire innate male erotic desire. Hippocratic physicians' view of impersonal desire limited their success in the medical marketplace.
