Adoption can bring undoubted happiness to both the childless couple andthe parentless child. However, it is the potential source of stresses for the adoptee and his adoptive parents. This paper seeks to show that such stresses particularly operate during the adolescence of the adoptee. The stresses on which attention will be focused derived from the conflicts over sexuality, controls and loss, which, although faced by all parents of adolescents, can be experienced to a much greater degree by adoptive parents, and from the struggles over the issue of identity, which can be particularly intense for the adopted adolescent.
