Lac Wapizagonke in Quebec (1, 2, 3, 4). These pictographs, usually painted with red ochre on rock cliffs, are of considerable archaeological importance. It is quite possible that a significant number of the paintings are of prehistoric origin although the appearance of post-contact subjects such as the horse and the gun indicates a more recent origin for some. The fact that few have been dated (5) has only added to the mystery pervading the considerable effort which has been made to understand their significance. Some, it is known, were motivated by the visionary experiences of the shamanartist (6) while others are chronicles of an event, such as a hunt, battle or voyage (7), but the purpose of the vast majority is as yet unknown. To further archaeological and ethnographic understanding, the paintings are currently under intensive study by members of the Canadian Rock Art Research Association (8).
