Ella me dijo, seguí adelante, sigue estudiando : Social and Semantic Differentiation in Casual Form of Address Variation

Abstract

In this study, I conducted a multivariate analysis of the factors that influence the distribution of voseo and tuteo verb forms in a Salvadoran corpus. The variation proved sensitive to factors such as verb form, education, type of pronoun, address and interaction. In speaker interaction, less intimacy and proximity increased the probability of tuteo. The data also showed that the choice of casual forms of address has semantic implications at the social and propositional level. At the social level, the variation distinguishes the type of relationship established by the interlocutors: voseo communicates familiarity and a higher degree of intimacy, while tuteo communicates familiarity only. At the propositional level, the forms of address help distinguish the communicative purpose of the speaker: voseo predominates when formulating a command with imperative, while tuteo predominates in formulating a negative request with the imperative.En este estudio, lleve a cabo un analisis multivariante de los factores ...
