Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(12), 1018–1019. Reviews the book, Life's career–Aging: Cultural variations on growing old edited by Barbara G. Myerhoff and Andrei Simic (1978). This monograph presents anthropological vignettes of aging in five disparate cultures–the Chagga of Kenya, Yugoslavia, a Yiddish old-age “ghetto” in California, a Mexican “new city” near Mexico City, and Spanish-speaking people in East Los Angeles. The emphasis is to illustrate continuities and discontinuities in aging in cultures undergoing change. Each vignette is presented in a self-contained chapter with an introduction and concluding chapter by the authors. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
