This article analyzes the changes that have caracterized museography of art museums and societal museums in North America over the last few decades. Taking into account the specific elements that have historically differentiated North American museums from European museums, the author emphasizes the role of artifacts in defining museography that focuses on using narration. Developments introduced by museums of societies in presenting exhibitions have brought on changes from which has emerged a discipline that questions the interpretation of artifacts and particularly masterpieces. North American museums have incrementally adopted this model of museography by developping theme-based exhibitions that critique the perspective on works of art. To a certain extent, we are witnessing a sort of mixing of the two approaches of museography, which are incidently becoming less and less distinct from one another.
