This paper provides a short introduction to wood properties and engineered wood products, reviews applications of reliability to wood structures, and focusses on four areas of special relevance to design: (1) calibration of design codes, using load and resistance factors to achieve a target background reliability level; (2) systems with multiple members and reliability-based system adjustment factors; (3) treatment of load duration effects as a process of damage accumulation, and reliability-based adjustment factors for design; and (4) serviceability limit states, limiting deflections and vibration requirements for wood floors. A list of references are provided for further reading.
