The required one credit course, Introduction to Library Research (LIB101), has been included in the State University of New York (SUNY) Plattsburgh's General Education program since 1979. A new approach to LIB101 was initiated in Spring 1993 with some of each semester's 20+ sections devoted to introducing students to information research more directly related to their major fields of study. A total of 10 sections are now devoted to five areas: Business, Education, the Humanities, the Sciences/Mathematics, and the Social Sciences. This paper describes why and how the focus areas were selected and the differences in sections that are subject - or discipline - focused as well as some of the successes and difficulties encountered in offering the course this way.
