A contextual study of the employment of golf mapping reveals the diversity of products, designs and uses. This research describes the different roles played by a very specialized range of products employed on and off the golf course and places them in social, historical and technological contexts. It argues for a relational approach to mapping as a process, based upon a wide investigation of practice, rather than a narrow focus on design, cognition or technology. Grounded in Actor-Network Theory, this approach reveals a complex web of links between producers, users, representations and meanings.
