Getting to Know Schools Using Performance Indicators: criteria, indicators and processes

Abstract

This paper is a report of a project currently being developed in Portugal. The project is concerned with the development and measurement of the quality of schools and of educational provision. It uses the notion of performance indicators as the key concern through which quality development and quality measurement are linked. Performance indicators in education, it is argued, have to be both part of the information system used in schools through which teachers and managers obtain a better understanding of their own processes and their own planning strategies and they have to have quantitative and qualitative dimensions. The project has developed a model of performance indicators which is of use to those working inside schools and those monitoring quality from the outside.
