This paper suggests how a refined approach to the study of local politics in Ontario might contribute to analyses of the complex geographies of governance in this province and, by implication, in Canada. In particular, it is argued that Canadian urban governance studies need to take seriously the apparatus of local agents and institutions, spanning the state and civil society, and to consider the ways in which local governance in this country is embedded within its wider political economy. Through such consideration, this paper suggests that the rescaling of urban and regional politics in Ontario and Canada might prove a fruitful venue for future research.
