All human societies have been shaped by their interaction with the environment, and all human societies have engaged in some depredation of the environment. However, the scale of environmental degradation during the past hundred years has been unprecedented. During the course of the twentieth century, there was a fourfold increase in the world's population and a fiftyfold increase in global industrial production. The latter growth, confined primarily to the developed economies, was achieved through a massive depletion of natural resources (especially the fossil fuels needed to meet energy demands), and the developed economies became increasingly dependent on the less developed economies for these resources. Through this geographic interdependence, the environmental problems of the more developed economies have spilled over to less developed economies as well.
