Ten teachers and thirty 5-years-old pupils from French schools participate to a study, that aimed to identify educational conditions, which allow children to understand idioms. Ten reading sessions of a short story that contained ten idioms varying in literality, metaphorical transparency and familiarity were videotaped, transcripted and coded. Analyses revealed that pupils were able to assess the meaning of several idioms by analyzing, for instance, elements from the context. They are helped by teachers. Teachers differ in the time they spend to explain idioms and in the strategies they use.
