Abstract

The manufacture of gilt leather began in Spain and later spread throughout Europe. Unfortunately gilt leather rarely survives in its original state, due mainly to the inherent problems of leather as a support/substrate for the decorated surface. This paper discusses the principal factors which influence condition and describes tests which help to determine condition. Methods to stabilize, re-shape and consolidate deteriorated leather are suggested, as well as techniques for repair and backing.
