think I'm going to stop requiring practice charts in my class, a colleague suddenly said during an afternoon conversation. The kids who are going to practice are going to practice, and the ones who aren't going to practice, just aren't going to practice. I don't think requiring practice charts does any good, and it just seems like a waste of time. His statement bothered me: I had always required practice charts at the high school where I teach and had a hard time imagining letting them go. Didn't we have an obligation to require students to practice? If we stopped requiring practice charts, wouldn't that be giving them permission to stop practicing? How would we hold them accountable? Our conversation haunted me for weeks.
