Abstract

Based on the author's first-hand observation of legislatures and extensive interviews conducted for this book, The Decline of Representative Democracy describes and analyzes the contemporary state of legislatures and the legislative process. Rosenthal explores many topics including: the shifting bases of representation, the development and transformation of legislative cultures, the competition for control, the role of interest groups, the lawmaking process, the job of leadership, and the balance of power between the governor and the legislature.
