Although described in cartographic textbooks, the method of relief depiction by traces of inclined planes has found only limited practical use—mainly because of the amount of work needed for their manual construction. This article describes the logic used by the author for the computer and plotter executed creation of these traces, based upon an initial input of digital terrain models, arranged in matrix form. A variety of parameters gives the computer program a great measure of flexibility. The distances between the inclined planes, their inclination and direction can be regulated freely, and both the planimetric and altimetric scales be chosen at will. The traces can be drawn in either an "unsmoothed" or "smoothed" fashion. A shading effect may be added and planimetric details can be combined with the drawing. The effects of the various parameters are demonstrated with a digital terrain model of the area surrounding Lake Tiberias (the Sea of Galilee).
