The brief communication examines the definition of the information society from economic, political, technological, and social conceptions, which reflect a single model of world development. International organizations use development rankings that naturally position developed nation-states at the top of world development models. The criteria used in current rankings to measure information's effect on societies are inadequate. Measurements are not translatable between the nations of the world and assumed development models upon which measurements are based contribute to and perpetuate economic, political, and technological domination and exploitation of developing nations. Also addressed are alternative methods of evaluation and measurement to alleviate preconceptions used when measuring the information society.
