This chapter describes a hierarchical object-based data model for geographic information abstraction, sometimes referred to as conceptual generalization. The model is based on the definition of database object classes used to represent terrain features. A hierarchy of superclasses and composite object classes is derived from the basic object classification. Based on this hierarchy a set of abstraction rules is created. In addition to the hierarchy of classes and their mutual relationships two other types of descriptions of the data set are distinguished: the basic geometric level, and a topological description. Selection rules are related to the three descriptions by having, successively: thematic, topologic, and geometric conditions. The class description is used as an interface to control the abstraction process. The end-user is expected to define the subject of the abstraction in terms of a selection of classes, and, after doing so the model will allow ‘on the fly’ information abstraction.
