Abstract

Inter-Union Competition in Collective Bargaining – Between Overbidding and Undercutting The strikes that hospital doctors and engine drivers have, in recent years, engaged in and the conflict over the introduction of collectively agreed minimum wages for mail-delivery services have drawn attention to occupational unionism as well as to the extent, consequences and perspectives of inter-union competition. This article focuses on inter-union competition in the field of collective bargaining. We distinguish between two main forms of this kind of rivalry that are characterised either by an overbidding or by an undercutting of collectively agreed standards by the competing union. Following a brief description of the collective-bargaining and trade union landscapes, this article focuses on the extent, form and character of these two forms of competition in collective bargaining and the different stances employers take towards them.
