LABEC is an acronym for “LAboratorio di tecniche nucleari per i BEni Culturali,” that is, “Laboratory of nuclear techniques for Cultural Heritage,” but as will be seen its activities include several other fields of applications besides Cultural Heritage. It has been created by the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) in its Sezione di Firenze and operates in close cooperation with the Department of Physics of the University. The present configuration is relatively recent, but the group that gave birth to LABEC has been working for almost 25 years in the field of accelerator-based applications to various fields: a few years ago, the decision of INFN to acknowledge this activity by creating a dedicated laboratory was indeed the consequence of a considerable experience and reputation already gained by the group.
