Human genius knows other forms of creation than the purely scientific one, but it knows no other, adequate to its steady improvement and perpetuation. The New Humanism is a double renaissance: a scientific renaissance for men of letters, and a literary one for men of science. The disciplined intellect of the man of science did not simply conquer the material world; it gave a revelation of the immaterial one far transcending that which had been given before by poets and dreamers. This chapter suggests the essential difference between the history of science as a whole on the one hand and the histories of particular branches of science on the other. Science is neither philosophy, nor religion, nor art; it is the totality of positive knowledge, as closely knit as possible; it is as different from its practical applications on the one hand, as it is from idle theorizing and blind faith on the other.
