Multimedia has been used for the production of interactive encyclopedias and atlases. Some large mapping bodies are also investigating multimedia technologies as ways of making mapping packages more usable. As the cost of devices needed to run multimedia packages becomes increasingly more accessable and affordable the demand for things like atlases and maps published as multimedia presentations will increase. The availability of multimedia products will also increase as the general public become aware of multimedia, and they have access to suitable multimedia devices. The paper looks at some of the multimedia packages already available at both the consumer level and at the professional level. It outlines the storage devices available and the computer platforms needed to run and develop multimedia packages.
