Developing archival context standards for functions in the higher education sector is a research project based at Glasgow University Archive Services. The project's central thesis is that archival description based on traditional, static interpretations of the principles of provenance and original order has limitations. Such description fails to capture vital contextual information about the purpose and function of records. The project is testing the capture of such information in specially created function and activity descriptions, linked to but separate from the descriptions of the records. It is using as a test bed the records of the higher education institutions in Scotland and will make the results available on GASHE (Gateway to Archives of Scottish Higher Education).2 Available from http://www.gashe.ac.uk (accessed 12 December 2004).
