Television series programs featuring families as the primary story vehicle were identified beginning in September 1950 through August 1990. The 497 families in this study were analyzed across 10 configuration types, seven head of household types, and eight marital status types. Results indicate that the extended family has been the most frequently occurring form of household since 1960. The nuclear family was found to be a continuing dominant influence, followed closely by the single‐parent family.
