The applicability of the psychoanalytic explanation of depression to the depressions that occur in old age is examined in this paper. Studies on depression throughout adulthood are reviewed. From the results of these studies, Freud's theory is concluded to have limited relevance to depressions in later life. Factors other than those proposed by psychoanalytic theory are seen as more important in describing these depressions.
